Women’s Group Presses Amazon to Stop Sale of Trump Merchandise

UltraViolet Action Calls on Amazon.com To Follow Macy’s Lead, Stop Promoting and Profiting of Trump’s Sexist, Racist and Violent Brand

A new petition from UltraViolet, a national women’s advocacy organization, is calling on Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos to “reject Trump’s sexism, racism and xenophobia” and stop the sale of Trump’s line of menswear.  The petition, which has been signed by more than 36,000 people since launching late last week, notes how Donald Trump has incited violence at his campaign events, and spewed racism and vitriol that has attracted support from notable white supremacists, including David Duke of the KKK.

Last year, Macy’s cut ties with Donald Trump’s brand after the Republican frontrunner called Mexican immigrants “rapists,” derided and objectified women by calling them “bimbos,” “fat pigs,” and in one case, “ a young and beautiful piece of ass.”  Trump has also said that he would stop all Muslims from entering the US and has encouraged violence against protesters at his events, even going so far as to say that protesters should be carried out on a stretcher and volunteering to pay the legal fees of any supporter who was arrested for assaulting a protester.

Despite massive public outcry, and major brands – including Serta, Macy’s, and NBC dumping Trump – Amazon continues to sell Trump ties and shirts and allows its vendors to sell Trump campaign merchandise, including a bumper sticker that says “Trump that bitch” and features a picture of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

Amazon has a history of doing the right thing and removing sexist merchandise.  After UltraViolet members spoke out in 2013, Amazon pulled a “zombie ex-girlfriend” shooting target that many advocates said promoted domestic violence and violence against women.

“Donald Trump has promoted violence at campaign events, stoked the fires of sexism and racism in America and espouses a political philosophy that borders on fascism,” explained Shaunna Thomas, co-founder of UltraViolet.  “These values have no place on the Amazon marketplace.  Last year, Macy’s did the right thing – listening to its customers and concluding that Trump was bad for business.  It’s long past time that Amazon listened to the voices of its customers and takes steps to dump Trump.”
