Women’s Group Slams GOP for 20-Week Abortion Ban Debate

Today, the House of Representatives passed The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, a bill banning abortions after 20 weeks with exceptions for rape, incest, or the live of the mother.

In response, Shaunna Thomas, co-founder of the national women’s group UltraViolet, released the following statement:

“From the devastating mass shooting in Las Vegas, to the catastrophic hurricane damage in Puerto Rico, our nation is in crisis and the American people are hurting. But rather than focus on gun control or humanitarian relief, Republicans in Congress are focusing on the one issue that truly unites their Party: attacking women’s fundamental rights to basic medical care.

“The reality is that a 20-week abortion ban is a terrible policy – cutting off women from medical treatment, criminalizing doctors for doing what is best for their patients, and preventing women from making their own decisions if pregnancy complications develop after a 20 week period. These restrictions fall disproportionately on low-income women and women of color, further exacerbating our nation’s already staggering inequality problem, and putting more American families at an undeniable disadvantage. As if all of this were not enough, the bill includes callous provisions forcing rape survivors to undergo a traumatic 48 hour waiting period consisting of multiple doctors visits.

“Republicans want to force women back into a time where we had no choice, while punishing doctors and rape survivors in the process.”
